For several decades researchers have been figuring out ways to attack disease with organisms and with hopes that micro sized robotic devices could be eventually used in the human body.
It is quite possible now to make molecular sized robots of a sort that can go into an animal and human to inspect and do some forms of medical procedures.
For probably 20 years we have had access to a simple digestible camera which can be used to check for cancer polyps instead of using the traditional invasive and potentially dangerous probe which usually requires that the patient be sedated.
So we are now in the world of nanotechnology.
